The way to visualize all the factors and comparing camera + lens vs a telescope + CCD sensor was very puzzling to me. A friend suggested this nifty tool : www.newastro.com/book_new/camera_app.php

It still is geared towards astronomers and their preferred method of describing telescopes (big front diameter is good, BIG aperture ratio is good (for more details). As a photographer I looked at long focal length is good and SMALL aperture is good (shorter exposure time).

You can punch in the numbers for your lens to get an idea how big the full moon will look. There also are other celestial targets to choose from. Also you can enter the camera parameters to compare FX vs DX bodies

Of course all this focal length comes at a price
– 600mm f/4 lens is really expensive but FAST
– the f/10 aperture is great for details but based on the telescope design, the amount of light is noticeably less than f/10. So this requires at least a polar-aligned motorized mount — possibly an autoguider as well ($ $ $ ). Even with a D3_S_ as a sensor.
